Crafts I & II spent an unseasonably gorgeous day on a field trip that started in Staunton, Virginia and ended in Downtown Harrisonburg where they enjoyed three tours and a local lunch. 

The glass blowing demo at Sunspots Studios is always a mesmerizing hit. The artists are knowledgeable and friendly, open to answering the many questions that arise. 

In Downtown Harrisonburg we were led on a walking tour to the Depression Era mural in the Federal Court House followed by the Lucy Simms mural on the Water Street parking deck painted by Bombproof. The tour was led by Jenny Burden of the Arts Council of the Valley.

After a lunch in the heart of downtown, we visited the Ice House and watched Hugo Kohl make a ring on the spot!

Lastly, we visited the historic house that has been transformed into the Virginia Quilt Museum where we heard tales of soldier ghosts and stories of an eerie presence.

Call for Entries: Diversity Club T-Shirt

Info: The BHS Diversity Club is seeking entries for a t-shirt design. The concept was inspired by the “co-exist” bumper sticker, pictured below. Entries should feature the letters of the word D-I-V-E-R-S-I-T-Y to represent all the facets of Broadway High School. The winning design will be printed in one color onto a colored t-shirt. Keep this in mind when working on your design. Work in one color and be sure your lines are clean and clear.

Crafts I students started the school year with a history lesson and drawing project. We studied the sand mandala traditions of Tibetan Buddhists. A labor of love, a symbolism of impermanence and a display of dedication and skill, the Monks painstakingly create their sand mandalas over the course of days, weeks. When finished, they ritualistically dismantle their creation by sweeping the sand into a pile and placing it in a jar or vessel. The jar is wrapped in silk and taken to a source of moving water where they return the sand back to nature. Students are creating their mandalas as a way to oil their creative gears, practice what they know, review types of balance and show, in a creative manner, items of importance to them.
